we’ve passed the solstice and the nights are getting shorter. vacation started at midwinter for me and we’ve spent the christmas out of town. the serious lack of snow in stockholm was depressing, but unfortunately the weather was mild in tällberg also. there was still some snow when we arrived though.

these will turn into a pair of socks for me eventually. purchased at ängsdesign.

i received many lovely christmas presents, for instance a knitting book on sock knitting. the one with fair isle patterns was a pre-christmas present! both from stefan, of course.

we found a lovely shop and café called tällbergs leva & bobutik.

after a relaxing vacation with a lot of reading and knitting, we were supposed to take the train home, but the recent storm, dagmar, put a stop to that. we managed to get bus tickets instead. we had some spare time before departure from rättvik. naturally, i found a yarn shop!

it’s new year’s eve tomorrow, i hope you all will have a lovely night and make sure that you do drink too much champagne – that’s what the new year celebration is all about isn’t it? i won’t though, champagne always make me really, really sick. just a glass or two will do. or perhaps three.

Happy New Year and Happy Knitting in 2012!

you know that lovely hat by kate davies i mentioned a few weeks ago? well, i bought the pattern at once, but didn’t get around to buying the yarn. emmy, a blog and ravelry friend had also fallen for the pattern and had ordered the yarn almost immediately from jamieson & smith. she had a brilliant idea – since the pattern require all nine natural shades of shetland wool, and only very little of each, we could share the yarn! hooray for wonderful ravelry friends!

jamieson & smith delivered very quickly, and emmy wound off half of each ball and sent it to me – oh joy!

mad about yarn

no it’s not just me, lots of creative people gathered at nordiska museet (the nordic museum) yesterday for a whole day dedicated to yarn, mad about yarn. there were knitting, i-cording, spinning, embroidery and bobbin lacing. the museum’s new textile curator, anna-karin jobs arnberg,  gave a tour of the textile gallery.

ulrica from hjälpstickan was there

i was very impressed by all the knitted goodies people had donated to hjälpstickan, who organizes volunteer knitters who want to donate knitted tings to homeless people all over sweden. ulrica is the brains and the organizer behind the whole thing and also my class mate at hv-skolan!

nordiska museet also has a really nice café where i relaxed with my knitting and good company; marika and carin.

on an impulse, i decided to try to finish this old thing instead of buying new yarn for a summer project. i started this cardigan in june 2005, so if i finish it soon, it will only have taken me six years! and i’m really looking forward to wearing it! does this mean that i am totally unaware of current fashion or that the design is timeless? i’m going with timeless design.

there was even a kal for this wrap/cardigan way back when that i joined with great enthusiasm. experience has since taught me not to join knit-a-longs since they are the kiss of death for my knitting projects. join a kal and loose all enthusiasm! don’t misunderstand me  – they’re great – but they don’t work for me.

anyway, i found a finished back, a finished right front and the beginnings of a left front in an old knitting bag and decided to give it another go. luckily, i’d scribbled all my project notes into the book, so it was easy just to pick it up where i’d left off. the tricky thing is always gauge of course, my gauge tend to change from day to day, but so far it looks ok.

the colour is a bit off in this photo

i only have a few cm left on the second sleeve and a veeeery long neckband to knit and after that it’s time to block! my goal is to finish the whole thing by the end of the week. i have no idea if it will actually fit in the end. i guess we’ll see!

i have more finished pieces that these now

i actually have a bunch of fo’s that i haven’t blogged, i’ll try to remedy that soon.

the cats normally wake me up at around 8 o’clock on saturday mornings. after feeding them, i usually have a few hours to myself during which i knit and watch a movie. fritz likes to lie next to me on the sofa. this morning he used my ball of yarn as a pillow.

after breakfast, we went to an antiques shop and bought a new (well, old, but new to us) lamp for the living room. after that we went to a neighbourhood café and had some coffe and toasted sandwiches. i brought my knitting, of course.

knitting for nephews

i’ve begun knitting for my nephews and i’m really excited about this! i’ve already finished a hat (bobble is still missing, but it will be completed shortly) and begun a pair of mittens. yesterday i realised that the mitten cuff was too narrow and had to rip it out, but i’ve started anew with larger needles.
